sincerelyironicStarted out as just an attempt to explain Jade's loose gender identity thing she's got going on, became fanfic instead.

"Are you a girl or a boy?"
That's the question Jade's probably heard more than any other in her lifetime - well, that and "Are you serious?"
The other girls in Jade's class always got angry if they were thought of as anything other than perfectly girly - well except for the one who got angry if she wasn't considered one of the boys, but the distinction has never really mattered to Jade.
She's always wanted to be like her Bro. Bro happened to be a boy. Ergo, Jade tried her hardest to be as cool a dude as possible. She cuts her hair short, gets the posture down with much practicing in the mirror, and hits on any pretty girl she sees. Most of them are about Bro's age, and while she is certain she is not as smooth as she should be regarding the pick-up lines, she still gets a lot of hair-ruffles and hugs and "Aren't you just the cutest?"
She's really not sure if that's a success or not. But she's seen guys get shot down before and she's pretty sure it doesn't involve hair ruffling and even more attention, so she counts it as a success. Even when she makes a mistake and hits on a pretty guy instead, the reaction is usually the same.

Eventually she takes to just letting people come to whatever conclusion they want, because it doesn't matter either way to her.
